Los Milics Vineyard
Los Milics Vineyard is a sculptural winery nestled at the foothills of the Mustang Mountains in southern Arizona, a region quickly evolving into a noted wine destination.
From the outset, we felt a keen responsibility to craft a design that would complement rather than compete with the striking landscape, an unspoiled swath of rolling grasslands, mountain peaks, and a verdant working vineyard. The resulting tasting room takes the form of an abstraction in the landscape that is perceived as a large-scale land art installation crafted in harmony with the terrain for an elevated wine-tasting experience.
The weathered-steel panels surrounding the tasting room accentuate the expansive horizon, while creating an ever-evolving experience for visitors as their appearance shifts dramatically per the time of day and season.
The steel panels line the entranceway to the tasting room, an expansive 3,4000-square-foot glass box oriented to the nearby mountain range. The tasting room reframes the landscape through the experience of taking away, suspending, and then reintroducing the iconic Mustang Mountains and The Biscuit as part of the destination’s collective spatial memory, while tasting the wines of Los Milics Vineyard.
The program includes indoor and outdoor seating, the latter on a sheltered patio. The main room is an airy flexible space that can be configured for public tastings or large private events, in addition to a more intimate private tasting room. The minimalist palette highlights the natural landscape, with walnut detailing and dark tones softening the space.
