MidFirst Bank
The Memorial Union Branch for MidFirst Bank is located on the main campus of Arizona State University. Our design expands upon the company’s visual identity, creating a space that resonates within its university context while maintaining an architectural language consistent with the overarching brand. We introduced the application of wood in this project, which has now been adapted as a core branding element by MidFirst Bank.
The stacked wood panels that define the interior are aggregated to make up a single patterned form. These components are derived from one sinuous line that adapts as it traces the program and its varying constraints. The woodwork enhances the restrained footprint’s sense of scale. It flows behind the teller line and transforms into a Voronoi pattern before emerging as a suspended canopy over the customer. Materials like the monolithic concrete teller line, stainless steel hoods, and porcelain tiles were selected to enhance the signature wood formwork.
Digital fabrication and modeling techniques allowed us to experiment, explore, and construct this project based on parameters of efficiency as applied to standard sized building materials, constructability, and grain pattern.
