Mummy Mountain Residence
The architecture of this new home responds to both the greater context of the Sonoran Desert and the inherent qualities of the site, which features ample views of the surrounding mountains.
A series of parallel sandblasted concrete block walls are configured so that landscape views flow freely through the home. These walls orient the spaces to overlook views of the McDowell Mountains, Superstition Mountains, Pinnacle Peak, and Four Peaks, while controlled openings within the walls capture the site’s subtle characteristics.
We placed the metal roof between the concrete walls. The pitch of the roof slopes to focus on specific sightlines. The configuration of Cor-Ten metal walls aid in editing out the neighboring homes, while narrowing in on views on the mountains in the distance. Within the interior the introduction of both veneered plywood and plaster walls, maple millwork, and white stone countertops domesticate the otherwise raw spaces.
The majority of the program is located on the main level at one elevation to accommodate the owner’s desire to age in place. Two other bedrooms are located at different elevations, and by means of the section, allow for privacy and a more distinct focus on the specific qualities of the desert landscape.
